Tana Communications  (Handset Assembly)

Tana Communication PLC was established in partnership with Janora Technologies PLC, where TIRET has the majority share. The aim of the project is to introduce new technologies to the country and save foreign currency expenditure by producing substitute technological products locally. It is the first of its kind in the country to enter in to such business and take advantage of the local market. The project’s machineries and equipment are supplied by a Chinese company called ZTE Corporation, whose main products will be GSM (Global System for Mobile) mobile phones and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) fixed wireless terminals.

<p.The plant will have assembly capacity of 1,000,000 pieces of handset and CDMA terminals per annum. The project’s total cost is estimated to be around 100 million Birr, where part of the cost is to be covered with long term loan to be obtained from Development Bank of Ethiopia. Currently the assembly plant’s construction is expected to be completed in a few months time.

Started with the assembly of handsets and mobile phones, it is envisaged that Tana Communication PLC will proceed to expand and start the production of Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) plant and play greater role in bringing about transfer of technology.
